ALABASTER – The Alabaster City Council will hold a public hearing for the proposed new city council wards during the next scheduled meeting on Monday, June 24 at 6:30 p.m. at Alabaster City Hall.

The public hearing will be held for an ordinance to amend Section 14-6 of the Alabaster Code of Ordinances and re-designate the geographical boundaries of election wards one through seven in the city following the 2020 Decennial Federal Census.

“This will be to set the new ward boundaries based on the 2020 census that we just went through,” Councilmember Kerri Pate said. “This is a requirement that we have to do, and we had a committee that went over all this.”

The Alabaster City Council previously held a public hearing for a version of the redistricting on Nov. 27, 2023 but voted to postpone the ordinance follow public feedback.

City councils are required to set new ward boundaries every 10 years to coincide with the most recent census data and due to the city growth since 2010, some ward boundaries have been changed in a new proposed map which aims to balance the population in each ward.

“Following the 2020 census, our redistricting committee has done a lot of work on reorganizing the wards in the way they need to be to account for that census,” Councilmember Jamie Cole said. “We’ll be amending the district lines for the city of Alabaster based on those recommendations.”

The ward changes will not affect school zoning as the city council’s wards are separate from the school system’s attendance zones which are set by Alabaster City Schools.

Residents may wish to consult the newly proposed wards and boundaries to ascertain if they could potentially be in a different ward for the municipal elections in 2025.
